Originally known as "Ghenish Chish" (which means Golden
Peak in Burushuski language), this beautiful peak is
more popularly known as "Spantik Peak" in the community
of climbers. It has various names like Golden Peak,
Golden Throne & Pyramid Mountain all depicting various
facets of the grandeur & beauty this spectacular peak.
The dominating golden color of its northwestern pillar
in Nagar Valley is awe inspiring & acts as a magnet to
the climbers. The famous British explorer Sir Martin Conway named
it Golden Parri which meant Golden Fairy. Ghenish also
means Queen, so the natives also call it Queen Mountain
.
This
peak is located in the Rakaposhi and Haramosh massif
neighboring Barpu and Karumbar Glaciers.
This
peak is located in the Rakaposhi and Haramosh massif
neighboring Barpu and Karumbar Glaciers. It is
surrounded by Chogo Lugma, Kerolugma, Barpu and
Pherphorush glaciers. The peaks surrounding Spantik are
Golden Poprash, Haramosh 7600m, Rakaposhi 7788m, Diran
7266m, Laila 6660m, Sasi Sayar, 6048m, Bashkai Peak
7031m and several other named and nameless peaks above
6000 meters.
Spantik can be climbed from Nagar valley
(Hunza) and the approach route is Gilgit - Hunza
Hopper Berichakor and Barpu Glacier. Whereas, its
approach route from Baltistan is via Skardu Shigar
Arundu and Doko.
|
|
It was
first climbed by Fanny Bullock Workman & his wife in 1903 via
southeast ridge. They abandoned the climb only 300
meters short of summit. Later, a group of five Germans,
led by Mr. Karl Kramer made its first successful climb in
1955. After a long pause of 23 years, British climbers
Mick Fowler and Victor Saunders climbed North-West
Golden Pillar of Spantik in 1978 and returned via the
South-West spur.
Since the last few years, Spantik has gained popularity
in the community of climbers by leaps & bounds and
dozens of climber from Europe, Americas, Australia and
Far East have climbed this comparatively easier
mountain. Situated in the south of Hispar Glacier and
standing above the Chogolungma Glacier, Spantik offers a
rewarding climb.
The
approach march to its beautiful camp site along the
glacier present spectacular scenery and vista of peaks.
The climb on the south-east ridge is comparatively
easier as compared to all other 7000+ peaks in the
Karakorums and Himalayas. This 8 km long ridge steadily
rises upto 2700 meters and offers many safe camp sites.
It is a straight ascent with a gradual gradient from 30º
to 45º over a mixture of easy & moderate patches. The
South-West route also goes along a snowy ridge of
moderate angularity.
On a clear day, the summit of Spantik presents awe
inspiring views of the neighboring monoliths of the
Karakorums like Diran Peak, Rakaposhi Group, Malubiting,
Ultar Group, Batura Group, Haramosh, Shimshal Mountains
and K2.
Although this peak
happens to be one of the easier 7000 meter peaks, it
demands respect and the climbers who wish to attempt its
climb must be physically fit with good training
background and ample experience in snow & of ice
climbing.
